Recipe for Occupation

I can’t help but to look at this thing from a military advisor and operational standpoint. From that perspective, logistics should be thought of as the material and even maybe theoretical means to the end.  Saying that capping capital gains and removing these morons from Wall Street are not logistics.  They are a potion of the desired end state. Perhaps better defined as part of the mission’s goal. Any undertaking of this size must be mapped through proper chains or department.

Your administrative department (S1) should include your leaders and your strategists. Your intelligence department (S2) should include analysts who actively map the human terrain, analyze the incoming information, influence the outgoing information (psychological operations), and plan accordingly. The intelligence planning needs to focus on maintaining pressure at the friction points at all times and not allow events or efforts to culminate outside of those friction points. When a wedge occurs in the opposition, the intelligence department must be prepared to rapidly exploit that weakness before it becomes a surface. It’s call “economy of force” - applying all of your assets to the appropriate places, viciously and evenly with the intended outcome of creating and exploiting wedges in the opposition before they are allowed to respond by turning those wedges or weaknesses into new surfaces or fortifications. Get inside their OODA loop. (Google it - Col John Boyd’s OODA Loop) The OODA loop stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act. Observe your opposition. Orient yourselves to their undertakings and find a way to exploit them. Decide on a best course of action (COA). And finally, Act on that decision. If you do this rapidly enough, you will disrupt their OODA loop by gaining the upper hand and forcing them to respond to you instead of you responding to them. That should be the ultimate goal of the intelligence department. Then maintain that inertia. Your logistics department (S3) should be responsible for the financing of projects, materials, supplies, etc. Whatever you need in order to perform your duties without interruption. Appoint a team of supply officers. These MUST be the most well connected citizens. And they MUST be willing to accept advice from and work fluidly with your logisticians - your political philosophers. (In turn, your logisticians MUST be willing to work fluidly with your intelligence department.) Develop a transportation plan (S4). Whether this is a few chartered busses, car-pooling, bicycles, whatever. You MUST have a way to transport your supporters to and from the friction points. Do not rely upon public transportation if you can help it. You don’t control it. Rapid deployment is key. Absolutely key. And finally, establish reliable communications department (S6). As civilians, you do not have the means to carry out encrypted communication. Text messaging and email are generally unsafe and easily targeted for interception by willing companies who may cooperate with law enforcement. The cops don’t want this thing turning into Tiananman Square, so be prepared for anything. Real time instant messaging is best - especially BBM or any other IM means. And consider your COA if cellular service goes off the grid. Even two way Motorolas are better than nothing - granted they will be intercepted, but still better than nothing.

Establish an operations center. Even if it is in the back of an RV. Get dry erase boards. Realistically plan your current ops and your future ops. Attach realistic timelines to your goals. Establish weekly and daily schedules that remain the same - these are your battle rhythms. So at the same time every day or the same time every week something specific occurs. It could be a shift rotation with proper work and information turnover, a water or food run, etc. Over planning and failing to meet your exact timeline is better than not planning at all. Establish a priority of work in progressive steps. Have daily meetings with your S-shops staff to discuss these priorities, current ops, and future ops.

And most of all, realize that every single one of your protesters is there for his or her own agenda, yet the solidarity remains the same. Capitalize on their presence and passion. And yet, do not micro-manage. Gently guide the masses in your desired direction.

I am part of the 99%. I am a US Marine, a foreign military advisor, a military education curriculum developer, and a counter-intelligence officer. This is my specialty. I am deployed to Afghanistan. And I am here for you. If you have any questions, you know where to reach me.

Me: So have you read anything in the Quran yet?

J: No, but I want to.  I mean, I read the Lord of the Rings and it’s pretty much the same thing.
